E3: Sony Press Conference News Round-Up

By: Matthew Goodman

Sony’s E3 presentation last night for the Playstation was quite the showcase. There was a live orchestra playing and a pumped up crowd cheering and screaming at every reveal. Sony revealed a whopping 17 games at this event, each presentation more impressive as the show progressed. Sony revealed their VR technology and several games that will be compatible with it. Let’s dive right in to these games and see how they stack up against each other.

GOD OF WAR

The first presentation of the night was a first look at the next installment in the God of War franchise. Kratos is looking mighty old this time around, and he’s a father now too. In the game demo we see Krato fight a giant monster and practice his fathering skills. This might be the smoothest God of War game yet!

God of War does not have a release date yet.

DAYS GONE

Bend Studio presented a glimpse of their open-world adventure game Days Gone, a huge zombie survival game that shows us hordes of zombies that haven’t been seen since the Left 4 Dead games. The gameplay shows our titular character struggling to escape from a huge fountain of zombies bursting after him. If you liked The Last of Us, definitely look into Days Gone. Check out the trailer and six minutes of gameplay below.

Days Gone does not have a release date yet.

THE LAST GUARDIAN

The Last Guardian is the latest game from genDESIGN that played to thunderous applause at the conference. The game chronicles the friendship between a boy and a giant creature. The footage shown was promising and surprisingly emotional. The Last Guardian has been in development for nine years; finally seeing the light of day on the PS4. Hopefully they are sticking to the October release date. Only time will tell.

The Last Guardian will be released this October for the PS4.

HORIZON ZERO DAWN

Horizon Zero Dawn was met with huge positive buzz after being teased at last year’s Sony E3 conference, and Guerrilla Games finally gave us an in-depth look at the game. Horizon looks like a bizzaro-world version of Tomb Raider mixed with Ark: Survival Evolved.  We learn from the presentation that in Horizon, mechanized creatures rule the world in a post-apocalyptic waste and humans are left under siege. The demo shows us unique physics, parkour and combat that our heroine displays.

Horizon Zero Dawn will be released on February 28th, 2017 for the PS4.

DETROIT BECOME HUMAN

Detroit Become Human was the most interesting and gripping presentation at Sony’s E3 this year, admittedly I’m a sucker for android stories and this looks like it was ripped straight from the pages of a Philip K. Dick novel. The concept of our creation turning against us is perfect for a story-driven game like this. The gameplay shows a load of depth and displays the detective skills that the titular character can perform. Check out the trailer below; this is going to be a good one.

Detroit Become Human does not have a release date yet.

SKYLANDERS IMAGINATORS

Activision announced Skylanders Imaginators yesterday, an entry in the Skylander games that blend real life toys with video game characters, this time with character customization. The big surprise from this was that Sony’s beloved character Crash Bandicoot will be playable in the game. But that’s not all, they also announced that three classic Crash Bandicoot games will be remastered for the PS4, presumably releasing later this year.

Skylanders is now available for PS4. Crash Bandicoot should arrive soon.

LEGO STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS

LEGO Star Wars games are awesome. This is a fact, not an opinion. Piggybacking on all the love that Star Wars: The Force Awakens has gotten since it was released in theaters last august, it makes sense for Warner Bros. to capitalize on the success of the movie by making a LEGO version of it. However, this appears to be different from other LEGO Star Wars games; this E3 trailer features actual dialogue from the film. This is awesome. The previous entries were more or less devoid of dialogue. I could not be more excited to pick this game up.

LEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens will be released on June 28th, 2016 for the PS4, Xbox One, Wii U, PS3, Nintendo 3DS, Xbox 360, PS Vita and PC.

DEATH STRANDING

It was a HUGE surprise when Hideo Kojima of Kojima Productions and Metal Gear fame came on stage to announce that he was working on a new project. If that wasn’t enough to get the crowd excited, he presented footage from the game titled Death Stranding. While the trailer is vague, we see The Walking Dead’s Norman Reedus in one of the most authentic displays of motion-capture that has ever been seen in a video game. Take a look at the trailer below.

Death Stranding does not have a release date yet.

SPIDER-MAN

Insomniac Games shocked everyone at the conference by showing a sizzle reel for a brand-new game centered around the web-swinger from Queens, aptly titled Spider-Man. It looks like this might be the first Spidey game that uses an engine that will take full advantage of his parkour abilities. All I hope for is a good story with good gameplay. The fact that Spider-Man will not be a tie-in to the upcoming Spider-Man: Homecoming movie is another reason to be hopeful. The trailer is fantastic and I can’t wait to see more footage from the game.

Spider-Man does not have a release date yet.

PS4 VR

The photo above is the brand-new Playstation VR; a 1080p virtual world in your head that runs up to 120fps. Sony revealed that there will be over 50 games VR-compatible at launch. The titles below were announced yesterday for the VR system. The Playstation VR will be released this October.
